Late last year, DC Comics launched its new Absolute Universe, featuring brand-new, darker versions of the most famous superheroes in the DC Universe. Notably, though, each of the titles has very much been set in their own little worlds. The first sign of any connection between the worlds occurred in this year’s Free Comic Book Day story, where we learned that the Mirror Master of this universe has teamed up with the Mirror Master of the DC Universe, and they are monitoring the various heroes of the Absolute Universe. Since “they are all being monitored by the Mirror Master” is a far, far cry from any REAL connection, we are very far away from an Absolute Justice League.
We have met Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Flash, and the Martian Manhunter (well, a version of the Martian Manhunter), but now there might have been a hint towards the introduction of another iconic member of the Justice League, and it all went down in this week’s Absolute Wonder Woman!
What is the villain of Absolute Wonder Woman #11?

In Absolute Wonder Woman #11 (by Kelly Thompson, Hayden Sherman, Jordie Bellaire, and Becca Carey), Wonder Woman continues her battle with Clea, an Absolute Universe version of a classic Wonder Woman villain, Queen Clea (she’s such an old character that she debuted in a SINGLE DIGIT issue of the original Wonder Woman series!), who was an Atlantean who stole Poseidon’s Trident, which gave her great powers.
In this storyline, Wonder Woman is trying to free a group of innocents (including Io, a longlost Amazon sister of Wonder Woman) from the maze that Clea keeps them trapped in, and during her final battle with Clea, she is wounded by the trident, but that allows Wonder Woman to throw it away, seemingly as part of a deal with some nameless entity…but that nameless entitty might be a major hint to a classic Justice Leaguer!
Which Justice League hero was possibly teased in the story?

After Wonder Woman “trades” the trident (a reference to an amazing flashback to when Diana was a child, and she was sent on a mission where she would presumably need to kill to succeed, but instead, she just struck a bargain), she receives a trident made out of water herself, which she confronts Clea with at the end of the issue.
Hmmm….creating weapons out of water. Which classic Justice Leaguer currently has that exact power? Ah, yes, Aquaman, one of the founding members of the Justice League, who has yet to make his Absolute Universe debut.

Now, do note that Aquaman only RECENTLY gained the ability to control water and turn it into objects. He received the power from his wife, Mera, as part of the Absolute Power crossover. Mera is more famous for having this power, so it could be a hint towards Mera, instead, but honestly, even if it IS a reference to Mera, then that, too, would indirectly be a hint towards Aquaman’s debut, as well, ANYways.
We’ll have to keep reading for the conclusion of this story arc in Absolute Wonder Woman #12 next month to see if this turns out to be the case!
