The final season of Outlander is going to answer a lot of burning questions, according to star Caitríona Balfe.
“I think a lot of reunions are going to be very exciting for fans,” Balfe, 46, tells PEOPLE. She also teases more information to come regarding season 7’s epic cliffhanger.
At the end of season 7, Jamie (Heughan) and Claire (Balfe) realized that their daughter, Faith, whom they thought died during childbirth, was alive. Balfe promises “some answers” on that topic in particular.
“Florrie May Wilkinson, who plays Fanny [Faith’s daughter], is an amazing addition to the cast. She’s so incredible,” Balfe says. “She’s 14 now, but such an incredible young actress.”
In the series, Claire realized that Fanny was Faith’s daughter because she was singing the same song that Claire sang to Faith in the season 7 finale. Balfe adds of Fanny’s entrance into the series, “It was really amazing to see the familial bonds strengthen.”

Other things she teases in the final season that she knows fans will love are “new locations.” Her costar, Sam Heughan, tells PEOPLE that there are also “some bright moments to the season, and definitely a reunion, which is good.”
In the final season, Jamie and Claire realize that “the war has followed them home to Fraser’s Ridge, now a thriving settlement that has grown and flourished in their absence” and “the Frasers are confronted with the question of what they are willing to sacrifice for the place they call home and, more importantly, what they would sacrifice to stay together.”
Saying goodbye to the characters they’ve played since 2014 is a tall order for both Balfe and Heughan, 45, the latter of whom told PEOPLE about his thoughts on the ending: “I don’t think you could ever be satisfied.”
“I honestly think you couldn’t, because we haven’t done all the books and we haven’t fully realized the book series,” he said, referring to the series Diana Gabaldon began in 1991 and has not yet finished.
Gabaldon announced that the 10th book in the series, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, would be the last, but no details about its release have been confirmed. Still, the actor said that he and Balfe “came back to do this season to give an ending that was satisfactory — or tied up some things” for the show’s dedicated fanbase.

“At the end of season 7, I certainly felt I wasn’t ready to walk away,” Heughan said. “I still had an itch to scratch, and I think the fans would’ve felt that as well, but it’s hard. How do you tie up something like this?”
Balfe added that showrunner Matt Roberts “kept his cards very close to his chest” about how the final season would unfold, particularly since “everyone” on set had “opinions.”
“Obviously, we have diverged from the books more, because Diana’s still writing, so it wasn’t clear where Matt was going to take the story, and I wouldn’t have wanted to have had his job, because it’s a really tough job to have,” she told PEOPLE. “Every single person wants their character to have their moment or whatever, so it would be hard to listen to everybody.”
Along with Balfe and Heughan, Outlander stars Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, John Bell, David Berry, Charles Vandervaart and Izzy Meikle-Small.
