After a few scenes with Ian acting strangely, fans saw him attempt to poison himself in the forest.
Thankfully Roger Mackenzie (Richard Rankin) came to his rescue and stopped it before the worst could happen.
While Ian – and indeed the fandom – was thankful for Roger intervening, fans have begun questioning how he knew it was happening in the first place.
Roger was indeed nearby during Ian’s horrific event, however, it was not immediately obvious what he was doing.
Now, Reddit users have begun asking what really happened, with Outlander fan Reamund heading up the inquest.
They wrote: “How did Roger know… that Ian was brewing up a poison to commit suicide?
“He doesn’t know that Claire’s medicine was raided, and I doubt he could identify that root or whatever by smell or even sight.
“He just comes out of nowhere and kicks over the brew. For all Roger knew, Ian was making a tea or something.”

Despite this complaint, the fan did go on to clarify: “I didn’t hate the episode as much as others on here, but this little bit irks me.”
Roger is a smart man, but there was absolutely no way he could have known exactly what was in Ian’s pot before kicking it over.
There were certainly some clues as to what Ian was about to do, but as Roger’s reactions were so quick, it is extremely unlikely he would have known what was going on.
Some fans agreed, however many justified the actions as one responded: “Roger could’ve been watching him and saw him bury the hatchet.
“Together with Rollo being tied up (which has never been shown before), he might have just put two and two together.”
Another wrote: “Because why would Ian tie Rollo up and walk far away to make a pot of tea? It looks suspicious and he put two and two together.
“Also Roger is a historian with an amateur botanist for a mother in law–he probably knows what hemlock looks like.”
While it is true Roger could have easily figured out what was going on, it could also be a glaring plot hole involving the locations and reactions of Roger.
