Here’s everything you need to know about Brian from his romance with Ellen to his tragic death.

Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie’s forbidden romance and its heartbreaking end
Brian was the illegitimate son of Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat (Clive Russell) and Davina Porter, a maid at Castle Downie.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood will see Brian and Ellen falling in love after an encounter during the Great Gathering in 1715, when the next MacKenzie Clan chieftain would be chosen.
Despite their forbidden love, the pair stopped at nothing to be together, with Jamie previously shedding light on their clandestine love affair in Outlander.
Despite her brothers’ objections, strong-willed Ellen pursued her passionate romance with Brian.

Her brothers attempted to marry her off in a bid to ease clan tensions, but Ellen offended her intended husband and then eloped with Brian.
She eventually fell pregnant with their child, with she and Brian hiding until she was visibly pregnant and her brothers had no choice but to allow her to marry him.
The pair eventually married a week before the birth of their first son William at Lallybroch.
The couple would go on to have three other children Jamie, Jenny (Laura Donnelly) and Robert.

The tragic end of Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie’s romance
Despite living together at Lallybroch after facing off from their foes, tragedy struck the family.
In 1727, William fell ill with smallpox and died aged 11. But Brian would go on to lose Ellen and his son Robert when they both perished during childbirth.
Jenny and Jamie tried to keep the family together as all three dealt with their collective loss.
Brian Fraser’s tragic death
Brian’s woes only got worse as he got older after Captain ‘Black Jack’ Randall (Tobias Menzies) turned up at Lallybroch one day while he was away at a funeral.

The Redcoat and his comrades ransacked the estate with Black Jack attempting to rape Jenny, but failing to do so.
Jamie tried to defend Jenny and was arrested and taken to Fort William, where he was flogged.
As depicted in Outlander, Black Jack meted out a second and more brutal whipping not long after the first one, which Brian sadly witnessed.
The flogging was unnecessarily sadistic with Black Jack trying to bind himself to Jamie with this extreme act of violence.
At one point during the whipping, Brian thought his son had died and the shock caused him to faint.
He was taken back home but the prospect of losing a third child was too much and Brian tragically died a couple of days later.
