Grey’s Anatomy season 23 trailer teases Bailey back in school, James Wolk’s Dr. Norton, and steamy romances

It’s mid-autumn, won’t you pick up the phone? Grey’s Anatomy is calling.

As the leaves change from green to gold to red, you can count on one thing — Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickens Jr. scrubbing back in for another season of life-saving at Grey Sloan Memorial hospital.

Grey’s Anatomy season 22 concluded in climactic fashion back in May, as Meredith Grey (Pompeo) proposed to Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) decided to abscond to Paris, and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) turned the heat up on her romance with Toni Wright (Jen Landon) by hooking up with Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush) — in Toni’s living room.

Fortunately, fans of the enduringly popular medical procedural never have to wait long for their stories, as Grey’s is just days away from its season 23 premiere — and Entertainment Weekly is exclusively debuting the first full-length trailer.

Grey’s has always revolved around its luminous star, and even since Pompeo stepped down from series regular to guest star in season 19, the show continues to slap her face on the marquee. She’s the first character viewers see in the season 23 trailer, before it cuts to Winston Ndugu (Anthony HIll) telling Jules Million (Adelaide Kane) that she’s “gorgeous, you know that?”

The full-length season 23 trailer, which drops three weeks after fans were given a brief first look at the new batch of episodes, places a lot of focus on the series’ messy web of romances. This is Grey’s Anatomy after all! If the entire surgical staff of Grey Sloan weren’t implicated in a group situationship, the hospital itself might fail to function.

Later on, Dr. Ndugu is cautioned by Ben Warren (Jason George) after he sees the young lovebirds sneaking out of an on-call room together. “Come clean and get ahead of it,” he warns. Has that ever worked for a doctor on Grey’s? Hardly. Then there’s the show’s steamiest love plot — the tumultuous triangle between Amelia, Toni, and Cass. “Sleeping with Cass was a huge mistake,” Amelia laments, later gazing longingly at Toni.

There’s also some fresh blood on the veteran series, which has learned over the course of 23 long seasons to balance out lifers like Pompeo and Wilson with pretty young things.

Debbie Allen’s urologist and board chairman Catherine Avery introduces Meredith to Dr. Seth Norton, a new character played by James Wolk. Best known for his appearances on Mad Men and Watchmen, Wolk’s Norton was described in a release at the time of his casting as a “handsome, arrogant surgeon-turned-businessman whose focus on the bottom line never wavers. He owns Olympic Regent Health, a luxury care medical center where patients pay out of pocket for elevated care.”

Norton asks Meredith for her “expertise on our VIP floor,” a luxe new wing at Grey Sloan which the characteristically flamboyant Catherine introduces by throwing her arms out and shouting, “Welcome to paradise!”

On the darker side of things, Atticus “Link” Lincoln’s (Chris Carmack) worringly increasing pill use is coming to a head. After sustaining a nasty shoulder injury from a bridge collapse in the season 22 finale, the season 23 trailer shows Link asking his wife, Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), where his prescription for the opioid pain reliever Tramadol is.

“I threw it away. I thought you weren’t in pain anymore?” she asks, but then looks suspiciously at a bottle of pills.

“In crisis we discover who we really are,” reads a series of title cards, essentially summing up the show’s ethos since its very first season. Then Bailey delivers the rallying cry: “Let’s go to battle.”

Speaking with EW last month, Scorsone, who first appeared on the series in season 7, praised creator Shonda Rhimes as “a genius,” and the structure that she built for her baby as “bulletproof.”

“She really created something that was flawless. If you go back to the pilot, it holds up like it was yesterday,” Scorsone continued. “All of the elements that she was able to include, and the way she can go back and forth between drama and comedy, created that structure for the subsequent showrunners and the subsequent writers. It’s a perfect thing that she made.”

Grey’s Anatomy returns to ABC on Oct. 15 at 10 p.m. ET, and streams the next day on Hulu.
