Fighter jet damaged at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport

Authorities said a single-engine plane caught fire after landing at a Mesa airport Thursday, causing an entire runway to be closed for the day.

The nose of a vintage fighter jet collapsed and caught on fire after landing at Phoenix-Mesa-Gateway Airport, the airport’s public information officer Brian Sexton said.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire and airport officials closed the full-length of the eastern runway until the plane could be moved.

Sexton said no injuries were reported, although the 63-year-old pilot was on board at the time of the fire.

The Mesa-based plane was returning from a training flight at the time of the incident, which will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration.

Sexton said passenger service was operational throughout the day and no flights were delayed as a result of the fire.
