Andy Cohen was warned he would be cut off as he went on a wild rant about former New York Mayor Eric Adams on CNN’s New Year’s Eve broadcast.
The 57-year-old TV presenter was joined by Anderson Cooper to front the coverage, with comedian BJ Novak making an appearance as one of their many guests. As 2026 rolled in, Cohen decided to take aim at Adams, branding his time as mayor “chaotic.”
Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the new mayor of New York City shortly after midnight in a private ceremony, ousting 65-year-old Adams. Talking about the former mayor, Cohen began his rant by turning to the cameras and saying, “I’d like to say, watching the final moments of Mayor Adams; chaotic.”
Cooper, 58, cut in and begged Cohen to stop as he said, “Oh no, do not, no.” Cohen ignored him and tried starting again, “I just want to say,” before Cooper cut in, “No, don’t. I’m out.”
Cohen was undeterred and continued, “I just wanna say, he got his pardons, he’s pardoned.” Novak, 46, also tried to get Cohen to stop as he said, “Andy, Andy, we gotta cut you off. Andy, I’ve seen this happen,” referencing Cohen’s 2022 rant about former mayor Bill de Blasio.

Cohen kept going, however, and said, “No, I’m just saying. Great, you got your pardons. Go off into the sunset. We’ll fiddle with what we have, with what you’ve left us with.” Cooper patted him on the back and said, “Sweetie.”
Cohen was referencing a criminal corruption case against Adams which was dismissed “with prejudice” by a federal judge in April 2025. This means the Department of Justice is permanently barred from resurrecting the bribery and campaign contribution charges against the former mayor.
Cohen’s rant continued, “Go dance away, we’ll see you at all the parties. You’ve partied your way through four years.” Cooper tried to get things back on track and asked, “Okay, is this how we’re entering 2026?”
Cohen replied, “No! I just wanna say, goodbye Mayor Adams.” Novak tried to save things by suggesting, “He did a good job with the rats, right?”
Cohen agreed, “You did it, you did it, you did it, didn’t you? Honestly. But I will say this, I think he maybe dented the rat population.” The hosts started speaking over each other before Cooper said, “I love how quickly you turned, like, ‘But he did do great work on rats.'”
Cohen replied, “I think he got rid of some of the rats, but isn’t that a metaphor of sorts.” Cooper burst out laughing and said, “Oh god.” Cohen continued, “I mean, let’s call it as it is,” before concluding, “Guess what, it’s 2026 and there are less rats.”

A third fan raved, “Andy Cohen just went on a fantastic rant about former Mayor Eric Adams on @CNN , which BJ Novak described as a “de Blasio style” takedown and led @andersoncooper to threaten to cut Andy off. They did agree there are fewer rats, now though.”
“Andy Cohen’s drunk rantings are hilarious! #cnnnye” someone else posted, while a fifth viewer commented, “We’re only a few minutes into 2026 and Andy Cohen is already giving us a contender for nastiest reads of the year #NewYear2026 #andycohen”
