The Pitt: One ER Doctor’s Take Reveals What Grey’s Anatomy Couldn’t Do in 21 Years

The Pitt has received immense critical praise, not just from fans and critics but also from medical professionals. In fact, one medical professional told PEOPLE that the HBO show has taught him something unexpected. Dr. J Mark Slaughter, who is an ER doctor in Texas, revealed that he watched the show to check for inaccuracies but was surprised when he ended up learning something instead.

Dr. Slaughter talked about the scene from Season 1 when Dr. Robby consoled two grieving children who were struggling to say goodbye to their dying father.

Dr. Robby tells family members as they’re trying to say goodbye to their dad, because they’re like, ‘We don’t know how to do this. How do we do this?’ He quotes the Hawaiian practice of Hoʻoponopono. It makes me emotional, but it’s, ‘I love you. Thank you. I forgive you. Please forgive me.’

He revealed that this line would stick with him forever, as he knows how hard it is to have such difficult discussions with patients.

My job is to help them go to the bedside and say goodbye, and to have a roadmap for that. I really didn’t have [one] before. I’m very grateful to The Pitt for that because it’s one of the most beautiful moments in The Pitt that’ll just stand with me for the rest of my career.

While he went into watching the show expecting it to be just another inaccurate fictional medical drama, he ended up learning something crucial instead. He remains very grateful to have watched the show.

Well, Dr. Slaughter’s remark underscores how important and resonant The Pitt has been for viewers. The effect it had on him and other medical professionals highlights what other medical shows like Grey’s Anatomy have failed to do all this time. Instead, they rely on unrealistic, dramatised versions of events with medical inaccuracies.

Noah Wyle Thinks ER Cast Would Have Failed The Pitt’s Bootcamp

One of the reasons why The Pitt has received so much praise is because of its medical accuracy. Apart from consulting real-life professionals and more, the show also made actors take a medical bootcamp before the shoot, as Noah Wyle revealed to CBS Sunday Mornings.

Because this is a fairly young ensemble, and certainly none of us have ever been doctors before, and we all had to start at a pretty high level of proficiency. It was really important that we came in a few weeks before we started shooting, learn how to put on your gloves, learn how to say the words, learn how to hold the instruments, learn how to move and think like a doctor, talk to doctors, go to the hospital.

Well, all of it certainly worked out well, given the acclaim the show has received. Moreover, taking a dig at his former ER co-stars, Wyle remarked that such a bootcamp would have never worked if it were his old castmates.

I will say that, you know, if this had been the ER cast, and we asked them to do three weeks of boot camp, you would have gotten six class clowns screwing around, not listening, playing with the gloves, making them into balloons, doing all sorts of crazy stuff.

The actor isn’t entirely wrong to make fun of his old castmates, given George Clooney’s penchant for pranks. Nonetheless, it was certainly the best choice that The Pitt’s production made in having all the actors do a medical bootcamp, for we can certainly see the results in how well it has been received.

The Pitt recently debuted its Season 2 and has already been renewed for a third season. While doing press for the second season promotion, the cast of the show recently played the Fond Out Which Character You Are game with Buzzfeed.

When asked to choose a character from another show to swing in to help during an emergency, multiple cast members, including Sepideh Moafi, Supriya Ganesh, and Shabana Azeez, selected Cristina Yang from Grey’s Anatomy.

While others chose Hawkeye Pierce, the war surgeon from Mac, they stuck with their answer. Dr. Cristina Yang, portrayed by Sandra Oh, remains one of the most fan-favorite characters from Grey’s Anatomy.
