Sam Heughan ‘hated’ one aspect of Outlander’s Jamie Fraser

The 45 year old Outlander actor shared in his recent Instagram documentary series: “His stock, which I can never tie myself. That’s the one piece of the costume I hated – was the stock. It’s just uncomfortable. It’s like wearing a tie to work.

“But for me, I always thought again, it should be a thing that’s quite loose that he wears it.

“He takes it off, he keeps it warm, maybe takes it off to bandage his hand or use it for washing with in the stream and then washes himself with it.

“Again, it’s a piece of practical clothing rather than just a costume.”

Heughan made these comments during a recent episode of his Outlander mini-documentary series Being Jamie on Instagram.

In each instalment, Heughan dissects different elements of embodying the character, with the fourth episode centred on the costumes.

The actor continued to explain in the video: “We had amazing costume designers on the show and I think that was always a part of the process, and it was really collaborative.

“It was amazing to see and you try on different things and they go away and create these fantastic costumes, so much detail, really sculpt them, so you were really building a character.”

Heughan stated that Jamie “always felt most comfortable” in his kilt and that he was a “true Scotsman”.

He stated: “We tried to keep that as much as we could in the seasons where wearing the kilt was outlawed. We tried to find moments where he could wear it.”

Heughan disclosed how he’d stash his mobile phone, a few nibbles and some lip balm in Jamie’s sporran.

He further commented: “The costume really helps and I’m not someone who likes to look in the mirror but when I did, I saw Jamie looking back at me.”
