Outlander star Sam Heughan has wrapped filming for the epic Season 7 in Scotland alongside co-star Caitriona Balfe. The 45-year-old actor described the experience as “flying by,” noting that this “mega season” was packed with episodes that were originally delayed from Season 6 due to the pandemic and Balfe’s pregnancy.

Season 7 ended up being a massive 18-episode run — a bumper season that gave fans more of Jamie and Claire than ever before. Heughan revealed that it was the longest and most complex season yet, and filming stretched over several months to accommodate the additional episodes.

Even as filming wrapped, Heughan has been keeping a secret from everyone, including Balfe. “Diana Gabaldon [the writer-creator] actually revealed to me how the whole thing’s going to end,” Heughan confessed. “She emailed me the last few pages of what will be the last book very early on, I think in the first few weeks of shooting and no one else has seen that I think, apart from one other exec producer. Even Caitríona’s not seen it, and I’m sworn to secrecy.”

As the series now gears up for its final Season 8, fans are also curious about the upcoming prequel. Heughan confirmed that Jamie won’t appear, as the story focuses on his parents, Ellen and Brian, when they were younger. “Maybe a young version of Jamie will pop up, but I’m a little too old for that now! I could play his dad, or a flash forward — it’s time travel, after all,” he joked.

Seasons 1 through 7 are now available for streaming, with the final season set to bring Jamie and Claire’s epic journey to its long-awaited conclusion.
