Outlander plot hole: Claire Fraser’s ‘sadist’ blunder creates big problem in Jamie romance

As many fans of Starz’s historical series patiently await the upcoming instalment of Outlander, one of them spotted the plot hole from the show’s earlier seasons. The observant viewer spotted a huge blunder from season two’s first episode which reflects back on to an episode in season one titled The Reckoning.

The opening episode from the second season of Outlander saw Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) return to the present day after being mysteriously transported to the 18th century.

After travelling to Scotland for their honeymoon with her husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) Claire encountered some time-travelling stones.

This resulted in her spending the majority of season one living in the exact location she transported from but in the past.
The 18th century is where she met Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) after they were both forced into hiding.

Jamie was in hiding because he was a wanted fugitive and would be arrested for a crime he didn’t commit.

Claire however, had caught the attention of the evil Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) who had tried to sexually assault her when they first met.

He wanted to know where she had come from as she had an English accent in Scotland and wouldn’t leave her alone.

Claire and Jamie got to know each other and hit it off, they eventually got married which provided Claire with a reason to be in Scotland, if Black Jack Randall came looking for her again.

With the dangers of the Jacobite rising and the upsetting fallout, Jamie convinced Claire it would be safer for her to return to the future.

After an emotional goodbye, she went back to the mysterious stones and time travelled back to Inverness to be with Frank.

However she didn’t return on her own but was pregnant with Jamie’s baby, thankfully Frank agreed to raise the child as his own.

He was concerned with Claire as she was skittish, but wouldn’t believe her story, instead, he believed she made it up to deal with the trauma she encountered while missing.

Due to this Claire found it difficult to open up about her experiences and only felt comfortable speaking to Mrs Graham (Tracy Wilkinson).

She was the friendly housekeeper at Reverends Wakefields (James Fleet) house, who helped Claire and Frank deal with local gossip after she reappeared.

During her conversation with Mrs Graham she revealed, she called Jamie a sadist, but he didn’t know what it meant.

However, a viewer noticed a huge blunder in the way Claire was relaying the information to the housekeeper.

After being spanked by Jamie in the episode titled The Reckoning Claire called him a sadist, which showed she had used the term before.

However, Jamie didn’t give any indication which suggested he didn’t understand the term.

While Outlander portrays actual historical events such as World War II, the Jacobite Rising and the American Revolution in the series, mistakes still happen.
