Outlander fans are ready for Roger’s redemption arc.
Roger MacKenzie is played by Richard Rankin in the Starz historical drama, which is based on the book series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon. While he’s not exactly a fan favorite, viewers of the series are ready for him to finally have some peace in the show’s final season, especially after all the trauma he has endured.
Season 7, which has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, aired its last episode in January. Season 8 is slated to be the series’ final season, with a prequel series also in the works called Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
With only 10 episodes left to wrap up the story, viewers are eager for the secondary character to stop being ‘tortured’ by the writers, with one fan writing on Reddit, “I still believe [author] only created Roger to torture him, but I’m in awe that the show writers seem to love torturing him even more. WTF is wrong with them? They all need therapy.”

Roger, who is a professor and time traveler, was adopted and raised by Reverend Wakefield after both of his parents were killed in WWII. Since he was introduced in season 2, his arc has been meeting and assisting his ancestors in the past, including his own father.
At one point in the series, he meets Morag MacKenzie, one of his ancestors, on a ship to the Americas and saves her and her baby’s life. If he hadn’t saved them, he would never have been born.
Season 5 has Roger suffering the most. First, he is mistaken for his wife Brianna’s rapist for which he is brutally beaten by his father-in-law and sold to the Mohawk. He is eventually freed, but soon finds himself in another precarious situation.
Morag’s husband Buck MacKenzie, misunderstands his intentions toward her and has him arrested and hanged as a regulator. While he survives the hanging, Roger is left catatonic and suicidal, unable to speak from the trauma of the near-death experience.
Viewers of the show are hoping that season 8 will have some kind of redemption arc for Roger. On Reddit, one fan wrote, “the writers keep treating Roger this so badly, it’s Almost comical at this point. He can never rest,” with another echoing. “Poor Roger gets hit after hit.”
One fan added. “Roger doesn’t nearly enough credit for the trauma he’s suffered.” Maybe season 8 will see Roger and his family finally at peace.
