What to expect from this week’s new episode
This week’s new episode continues to shed light on the difficulties the protagonists face, more specifically Julia, who gave birth to a boy during last week’s episode. Previously, viewers tuning in witnessed Lord Lovat, who assumes Julia’s child is his, turn to his favorite psychic in hopes of learning more about his son.
This week, Lord Lovat takes what the physic said about his son’s greatness to heart and decides to go to extreme lengths to fulfill the prophecy. Meanwhile, Dougal decides to attend a clandestine meeting that could spell political disaster for his clan.
Episode 6, “Birthright,” recap
For those who may have missed last week’s episode, there were many significant developments that happened during the hour-long episode. Most of the air time focused on one of the two main couples portrayed in the show, Henry and Julia.
The episode focused heavily on Julia, who at the beginning of the episode, went into labor. Determined to get the baby there safely, she sought help from Lord Lovat’s housekeeper, Davina (Brian’s mother). Unfortunately for Julia, things didn’t start of smoothly as Davina, who seemingly has a problem with Julia, called in midwives from across the land to assist.
Despite their well-meaning intentions at first, the midwives quickly turned to berating Julia after Davina accused Julia of seducing Lord Lovat, which during those times, made Julia out to be a temptress and sinner. The constant threats and pleas to confess to her sins caused Julia to stress and panic during the labor process, but she wasn’t the only one suffering during the moment as Davina began remembering her very similar labor story with Brian all those years ago.
Finally, Davina came to her senses and ordered the taunting midwives to leave and decided to help Julia with her delivery, just the two of them. Though the midwives left in a haste, it wasn’t long before Lord Lovat, Brian, and a priest barged into the room as Lord Lovat called for an immediate wedding ceremony while Julia was giving birth, to make their child his legitimate heir.
Despite his efforts, Brian was able to deter Lord Lovat from completing the ill-timed ceremony. Unfortunately for Brian though, he paid the ultimate price for playing the hero as his father gave him several lashings for standing in his way.
Following stress and problems throughout the day, Julia gave birth to a healthy boy and later introduced him to Brian. While together, Julia and Brian shared a heartfelt moment and seemingly made up after their spat that happened before Beltane.
While Julia was working through an intense labor, fans also got the chance to catch up with Henry, who had initially made plans to visit midwives across the land in an effort to locate Julia, but after one of the Grant’s employees lends a helping hand, decides to stay at the estate and meet with the midwives there.
Unfortunately for Henry, the seemingly generous gesture turned out to be a ploy launched by the Grants to stop Henry’s search for Julia altogether. During the meetings with the midwives, one told Henry that she met Julia and knew her and his child to be deceased, which turned out to be a lie she was paid to relay to him by the Grants.
Thinking Julia to be dead, Henry was launched back in time by his grief to revisit memories with his beloved, and in his frazzled state, Henry returned to a brothel and had intimate relations with a woman he believed to be Julia.
Ellen did not play a major part in last week’s episode, but with mention of her brother during this week’s upcoming episode, fans are sure to see more of her story unfold in the coming weeks.
