Outlander: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Jenny And Ian

Fans always talk about how Clan Fraser or Clan MacKenzie is their favorite family on Outlander. However, no one ever seems to consider Clan Murray. Introduced in season 1, fans were introduced to Jenny and Ian Murray when Jamie and Claire returned to Lallybroch. Here, Jamie was surprised to find that his sister and best friend had already started a family and had been married for years.

While many of the fans were aware of the sibling bond between Jenny and Jamie, not much is known about the original Murray members. From Jenny and Ian’s love story to the identity of their children, here are 10 things you didn’t know about Jenny and Ian.

How They Got Together

When fans first met Jenny and Ian in season 1, the pair had already been married for years and started a family. However, do you know how they got together? It’s quite a cute story. In the aftermath of her father’s death and Jamie’s imprisonment, Jenny was left in charge of Lallybroch.

As a favor to Jamie, Ian decides that he would help her to run the estate. Jenny didn’t mind the extra pair of hands as she and Ian had worked together before to keep the home maintained. Eventually, the pair fell in love, with Jenny making the first move and proposing they should get married.

How Ian Lost His Leg

When Ian was first introduced to the show, the Scotsman was seen to have a prosthetic limb after he lost the lower part of his right leg to a war injury. While the show has seen Ian talking about how he has often experienced Phantom limb syndrome, it hasn’t always been clear as to why the leg needed to be removed.

In his teen years, he and Jamie enlisted in the army, where they spent years fighting side by side. However, in a battle at Daumier, Ian was seriously injured when he caught a stray bullet in the leg and it became infected. After his leg was amputated to save his life, Jamie then ordered Ian to return home to look after Jenny.

Jenny Is Older Than Jamie And Ian

Not many people realize this but Jenny is actually older than both Ian (1720) and Jamie (1721). Born in 1719, Jenny was the second child and only daughter of Brian and Ellen Fraser. Jenny was very close to both Jamie and Ian when they were growing up, but was particularly protective of Jamie due to the deaths of their other siblings.

Ironically, Laura Donnelly is a couple of younger than Sam Heughan and Steven Cree. Donnelly also has a history with Heughan, with both actors meeting in college and working together in the film, Heart of Lightness (2014).

They Gave Fergus Ian’s Storyline

In “If Not For Hope,” fans may remember that Marsali asked Murtagh if he could try to recruit Fergus for the Regulators. When Murtagh asks why she would want to send her husband to war, Marsali tells him about how Fergus worries that people view him as half a man because of his handicap.

Ultimately, Fergus turns his offer down because he feels like his place is at home with his family. Fans might not know this but this storyline is actually from “Dragonfly in Amber,” where Jenny asks Jamie to take Ian with him to Culloden. Like Fergus, Ian chooses to stay at home and look after the estate.

They Have Eight Children

Did you know that Jenny and Ian had eight children in total – including Fergus, who they fostered for some time? Fans have already met Young Ian, Young Jamie, Janet, and baby Katherine – but what about the rest of their brood?

As well as the four we already knew, Jenny also gave birth to Margaret (1743), Michael (1748) and Caitlin (1749). Baby Margaret had a brief cameo in “The Watch,” but seemed to be forgotten by the writers as she was not seen again after this. Michael, too, hasn’t made an appearance even though he is the twin brother of Janet. Sadly, fans will never meet Caitlin, as the child died the same day she was born.

Jenny Had Met Roger Before

Roger Mac

There’s a long time before this storyline is going to pass, but Roger officially met Jenny and her father in 1739. In Written in My Own Hearts Blood, Roger and Bucky travel back in time to look for Jemmy after he was kidnapped by Brianna’s co-worker, Rob Cameron.

Whilst they were looking for Jemmy, they came across Jenny and Brian, who gladly welcomed them into their home and helped them with their search. Jenny was polite towards the Scotsman and they became well-acquainted with each other. However, they have yet to meet up again in the original timeline.

Ian Dies From Consumption

Whether the writers choose to go down this path or not is still up for debate. However, some fans may be devastated to learn that Ian dies in An Echo In The Bone after contracting consumption (tuberculosis). This all came about as a result of Ian being imprisoned at Tolbooth after Culloden when he was questioned over Jamie’s whereabouts.

Since the symptoms had been dormant and not as deliberating for thirty years, the disease had progressed too far. was too late for Claire to do anything about it. As a result, Ian dies surrounded by his family and Claire and Jenny end up falling out.

Jenny And Brianna Have A Strong Bond

Due to a scheduling conflict, Donnelly wasn’t available to film during season 4, which is why fans got to see more of Ian and Brianna’s bond. However, in the books, Brianna and Jenny have a close relationship. In Drums of Autumn, Brianna travels back to the past to warn Claire and Jamie of their impending deaths.

As she arrives at Lallybroch, Jenny immediately recognizes her as Jamie’s daughter due to her resemblance to their mother. Both Jenny and Ian are delighted to see their niece and do whatever they can to make her feel welcome – going as far as to protect Brianna from Laoghaire. Jenny and Brianna also share a sweet moment when Jenny remarks on how much Brianna resembles Jamie.

Jenny Knows Claire Is A Time-Traveler

On the show, Jamie and Claire decided it would be best to keep the truth from Jenny for the time being. However, that’s not to say that she won’t find out, as Jenny does eventually learn that Claire is a time-traveler in the books. Soon after finding out Ian was dying, Claire decides to tell the Murrays the truth about where she came from.

However, Jenny remains skeptical of the story and still believes her to be a witch – which is why she and Claire fall out (because Jenny believes Claire had the powers to save Ian and refused to do so out of spite). Eventually, the pair put their differences aside in Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.

Jenny Moves To America

In the aftermath of Ian’s death, Jenny decides that she would leave Lallybroch and move to America with Jamie. With Lallybroch having a new Laird and Lady to run the estate, Jenny decides to let her son’s family take charge and start over in America as to avoid clashing with her new daughter-in-law.

Once they arrive in America, Jenny and Claire decide to patch up their relationship before the widow temporarily sets up home with Fergus and Marsali. After Fergus’s printshop burns down, Jenny then decides to move to Fraser’s Ridge to be close to her family.
