We’ve all been eagerly waiting for Kate Walsh’s return to Grey’s Anatomy — and the moment is finally just around the corner. Her comeback is set for the end of this month, and while the excitement is real, there’s also a disappointing twist hiding behind the good news.
Walsh will once again don the white coat as Dr. Addison Montgomery in season 22, episode 10, which airs Thursday, Jan. 29. Even better, her appearance aligns with another long-awaited return: Caterina Scorsone stepping back in as Amelia Shepherd after an eight-episode absence. Everything sounds perfect… so what’s the catch?
Kate Walsh is returning — but only for a single episode
Addison may have debuted as a complicated antagonist, but fans quickly fell in love with her compassion, skill, and dedication to mothers and babies. Her time on Private Practice only deepened that connection, and every return to Grey Sloan has felt like a gift.
That’s why many hoped she’d stay for more than one hour of screen time. Unfortunately, Matt Webb Mitovich has confirmed Walsh is appearing in just a single episode this season. Could she pop up again before filming wraps? Technically yes, but history suggests we’ll likely have to wait until season 23 — assuming the series gets renewed.
What to expect in Season 22, Episode 10
Details remain limited, but we do know that Walsh’s episode is tied closely to Amelia’s return. Scorsone’s temporary exit was written as Amelia taking a much-needed sabbatical following the death of her friend Monica Beltran — and after years without a real break from the emotional toll of her work.
It’s entirely possible that Amelia sought out Addison during this time. Their bond runs deep; Addison supported Amelia through some of her darkest moments, including the loss of her son, Christopher. And Amelia will need that support again as she comes home to several major hospital crises: Jo’s near-fatal childbirth and Webber’s upcoming cancer surgery among them.
If the timelines don’t overlap perfectly, Addison’s episode may at least include an emotional update or nod to their close friendship — a reminder of one of the show’s most meaningful connections.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC, with episodes streaming the next day on Hulu.
