Claire Fraser’s silent struggle and the one thing she couldn’t discuss with Jamie in Outlander

Fans of Outlander are revisiting past seasons for comfort as the show takes a break from our screens.

Despite the deep love between Jamie (portrayed by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe), Claire found it difficult to open up about her first husband, Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), whom she was married to before her time-traveling adventures began.

On the Outlander podcast, executive producers Ronald D. Moore and Toni Graphia discussed this sensitive subject that created a divide between the iconic couple.

Graphia commented on the irony of Claire’s situation, saying: “Claire, ironically, there’s not anyone she can talk to really about Frank, especially Jamie. Even though Jamie knows about Frank, she’s worried about him.”

She emphasized the importance of acknowledging Claire’s past feelings for Frank, stating: “We felt it was important to show she loved Frank once, she’s concerned about him.”, reports the Scottish Daily Express.

Graphia also highlighted how Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon) became an unexpected confidant for Claire in season two: “He’s on her mind and Master Raymond becomes her confidant, and I love that when she starts to talk to Master Raymond about him, it builds a friendship between them.”

Moore chimed in with a revelation about the adaptation process: “I don’t think this was in the book.”

Graphia revealed: “No, actually this was your idea. I had in the first draft he read her astrological chart, which actually made no sense because she wasn’t born in the year that she tells him she’s born in.

“He gleaned there was something off about her because she lied and it doesn’t add up.”

The pivotal scene unfolds with Claire confronting Master Raymond following a poisoning incident, attempting to unmask the perpetrator.

During her visit to the apothecary, Claire also voices her worries about Frank and seeks insights into how her first spouse is faring following her abrupt departure.

Master Raymond catches Claire off guard by announcing that their paths will cross once more eventually.

As unveiled in the second season’s start, Claire does indeed find her way back to Frank during the 20th century.

Describing the apothecary interaction, Graphia termed it a “nice Easter egg” as it hinted at the eventual reunion of Claire and Frank.

The bond between Claire and Master Raymond grows stronger after he gifted her a poison-detecting necklace.

His role becomes even more crucial when he saves Claire from the brink of death post the loss of her baby Faith.

Later, Claire returns the favor by rescuing Raymond from accusations of sorcery and pending execution.
