Ellen Pompeo and Scott Speedman are officially set to return for another season of Grey’s Anatomy.

Showrunner Meg Marinis confirmed the news during an interview with TVLine, explaining that both stars have demanding schedules but the series will feature them whenever possible. “Both Ellen [Pompeo] and Scott [Speedman] are super busy, so we’ll take them as often as we can get them,” Marinis shared.

Marinis was likely referring to Pompeo’s upcoming projects with streaming platform Hulu and Speedman’s new ABC drama, R.J. Decker. Despite their other commitments, however, both actors managed to appear in recurring roles during Grey’s Anatomy season 22 last year, suggesting that a similar arrangement could be in store for season 23.

What to Expect From Meredith and Nick in Season 23

The season 23 trailer offers a glimpse of Meredith’s potential involvement at Grey Sloan Memorial. Catherine (Debbie Allen) introduces her to Dr. Seth Norton, who seeks Meredith’s expertise regarding the hospital’s new VIP floor. However, the exact nature of his request remains uncertain. Will Meredith simply provide some professional guidance, or will she be asked to assume a more formal leadership position? Whatever the answer, the upcoming season could see her taking on additional responsibilities at Grey Sloan.

Although Nick is nowhere to be seen in the trailer, Marinis’ remarks confirm that he will still be part of the story. One possibility is that he is continuing to recover from the kidney surgery he underwent after the devastating events of the season 22 finale. Nick was seriously hurt when a bridge collapsed, leaving him with severe abdominal trauma. Fortunately, Miranda and Meredith joined forces to save both his transplanted kidney and his life.

The season 22 finale also marked a major turning point in Meredith and Nick’s relationship. Watching Nick hover near death forced Meredith to confront how fragile their time together really is. The experience helped her recognize the importance of the life they have built as a couple, raising their children together. Once Nick survived the surgery, Meredith took their relationship to the next level by proposing—and Nick happily accepted.

For a long time, it was uncertain whether Meredith would ever choose to marry again. But after years of growing closer to Nick, she now appears ready to make that commitment. Still, fans expecting a traditional, extravagant wedding may need to adjust their expectations. According to Marinis, Meredith’s big day will be far more understated than some might imagine.

“It’s Meredith Grey, so don’t expect a poofy white dress,” Marinis cautioned.

Both appear satisfied with their professional lives, while their responsibilities at home keep them busy raising three wonderful children.
